As a prequel novella, this author did a fantastic job of giving the readers enough of a tease to get them interested in the full length story of Ryan and Vanessa. Starting with Ryan, we get glimpses of a tragic accident in his past and his downward spiral since. After picking himself up, along with wingman and best friend Blake, named themselves the Kings of Mystic, has gone back to his playboy ways. That is, until he meets Vanessa... Taking place in Mystic Beach, I can't wait to read the story that these two will bring! I love Ryan's cocky, rich boy attitude and how Vanessa is already making him work for it. But not in a hard to get type of way, more so the fact that she knows she's worth more than being treated like any random girl. I'm about to jump into The Last Summer Girl and see how this goes!

The author had mentioned the book during an FB post and after seeing the HOT cover and blurb, I wanted to read it immediately. We meet Ryan Stone, a Harvard MBA candidate who spirals into heavy drinking and meaningless sex after his sister passes away. I understand why he’s mad at the world but the way he treats women simply made him a jerk. His non-stop drinking and partying made me cringe at times. And I love a good party myself. When he finally admits to feeling dirty… I felt sorry for him. When Ryan Stone hits a point so low, it reminded me of a very depressing movie. As continued to read the novella, I understood what SC York wanted to convey. The insight into Ryan’s self-destructiveness is important. To meet Ryan as a jerk is even more crucial. We need to watch Ryan evolve especially when a certain woman begins to thaw his frozen heart. KINGS OF MYSTIC was a really quick read and I read it in one sitting. There were moments in the book that I wished were longer. At times, I wanted SC York to delve deeper into her characters and now I understand why she wrote the prequel the way she did… duh… it’s an introduction to a broken Ryan and the woman who will change him.I look forward to reading THE LAST SUMMER GIRL.

Just the perfect amount of everything. Dabbling in getting to know the characters better from LSG, had me holding my breath for what would come next. Ryan's love for Abby was so pure, his friendship with Blake is to the bone and what he feels for Vanessa is like breathing again for him.To read how he got there, his struggle made him more likeable. Sometimes loss and hurt makes you hard in his case it was literal. The transformation from Emily, to Blaire, everyone in between, then to Vannesa was, WOW.YOU MUST GET THIS IN YOUR TBR PILE, IT IS STEAMY!

A great beginning! I love a good summer read and this has all of the markers of being one of the better ones I've read in a long time. Ryan is rich, successful, hot and just damaged enough by his past to make him almost a bad boy. Vanessa is hard working, smart, determined and struggling to make ends meet before she moves on from the quaint beach town that she grew up in. She's adorable and charming and he's sexy and way out of her league. I can't wait to see where this goes!

Kings of Mystics was amazing! To truly understand why someone is the way they are, is brilliant. I could feel Ryan's pain and bitterness from what happened in his past. He may play the part of the cold-hearted playboy, but deep down, he's just trying to protect himself. I feel that Vanessa is perfect for Ryan, and he thinks that also. Vanessa isn't the rich, clingy, gold diggers wanting to jump into his bed. She really likes him, but she will not be taken for a fool. I fell in love with Vanessa's character immediately for her humbleness. This was the perfect way to start a series! I CANNOT wait to start reading The Last Summer Girl. Bring it on!! 💙💙💙

Kings of Mystic: A Prequel by author S.C. York is the story that explains a lot about Ryan. I needed to read this to get more into his mindset. The Last Summer Girl is the series the next book will take you more into the love story. This one is the set up for that. I really liked this, I got to have an in-depth view of Ryan and what really makes him tick. Ryan is very complicated. He was a man with a bright future, but this his sister dies, and that all changes. He becomes someone else. This person is not fun to be around either. We get to know his best friend Blake and how he tries to help turn Ryan around.Vanessa though she really brings Ryan out of the darkness into the light. But is Ryan ready for her? She makes him care again. But the question still remains is she the woman he can truly slow down for? This is a great start to this series and explains a lot that you will need for the next story. I really loved it and was glad to have picked it up.Five shooting Stars

This prequel made me want more! I feel for Ryan, but he's a jerk, but he's hot! I just don't know what to think of him yet! Wonderful beginning that does what a prequel should: make you want more of the story! Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy for my honest opinion, can't wait to read Last Summer Girl!

I had readThe Last Summer Girl, what feels like ages ago, and kind of forgot about the story concluding soon. Randomly I was looking through the books I've read and saw that the author put out a novella!I enjoyed seeing Ryan's POV from the first time he met Vanessa and also their first date. I'm excited for the conclusion of their story!

Loved this short read as a prequel to The Last Summer Girl. It gets you ready for the range of emotions you will get from each of the characters in how they spent their last summer before heading out into the big world to spread their wings and find themselves.

LOVE hearing things from Ryan's perspective. Of course, there's always two sides to every story and there is more to Ryan than we all thought at the end of The Last Summer Girl. He's still a cocky bastard, don't get me wrong, but this story will give you a peek inside his dirty mind.

The story had promise but I found I didn't fully connect with the characters. It felt disjointed for me.But .... there was something to the story that drew me in so knowing it's a prequel I will be getting the next book to see what happens.

This is a prequel to the Last Summer Girl, but can be read as a standalone. This was written from Ryan's point of view and you get to know Abby, Vanessa and Blake. I received an arc copy and voluntarily chose to review this book.

I received an ARC of this book for a review. Not enough of a story here, maybe the novel will be better but based on what was in this novella I will not be buying it. I didn't connect with the characters enough for me to be encouraged to buy the book. This should have been classed as a sample not a novella.Sorry but this is not one for me.

As this is a prequel to the Last Summer Girl, it does leave you hanging. It's a fast read but I couldn't see the plot and did not connect with the characters, it just gives you minor glimpses, with no real background.I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Quick readThis was an awesome look I to the background of Ryan. It was great to get to see the events from his perspective. This novella does not give away anything in the Last Summer Girl if you choose to read it first.

Dear Reader, As I was writing, Come the Fall, the sequel to the Last Summer Girl and the characters came alive in my head again; I realized that I did you wrong. I always knew who Ryan was in my mind, but because LSG was Vanessa's POV you didn't get a chance to know his story. So I let him tell it! Enjoy!Love,S.C.

(3.5 Stars) While the blurb for this prequel novella says that it can be read as a standalone, I am not sure that is correct. I am not sure if my enjoyment of the story would have been fuller if I’d read the novel to which this is a sequel or not, but I really did not like the character of Ryan. There is a lot lost in the novella length especially with regards to fully fleshing out characters, and I think that is what happened in this case. Despite beginning the story feeling terrible for Ryan over the loss of his sister, Abby, throughout the rest of the story, he was nothing more than a caricature of a playboy and there was no real depth to his character. The storytelling was also a little disjointed and confusing and I think that the story would benefit from some serious editing and fleshing out. I also felt that the story ended on a sort-of cliffhanger which completely refutes the idea that it is a standalone novel. I feel that the story has a lot of potential and that potential might be realized in the novel for which it is a prequel. However, if an author wishes to tell the story before the story, as it were, there needs to be real reason for that prequel and it needs to be as full-fleshed out as the original, or the reader is going to feel cheated.I think that I would enjoy the story in a more fully realized form, and would love to re-read it and re-review if that ever happens. The novella is intended for mature audiences only.Reviewed by HR Duby for Romance Authors that Rock

If you're looking for a bad boy who redeems himself, Ryan in "Kings of Mystic" is a great starting point. "Kings of Mystic: A Prequel" (to "The Last Summer Girl") seamlessly flowed with snippets from "The Last Summer Girl" and flawlessly set up Ryan's origin story, revealing more in-depth why he is the way he is, and why he wants to turn his life around. The moment he meets Vanessa is like dumping cold water on his world, another shock to his system, but finally one that sets him up for positive chance rather than devastation. SC York wrote Ryan's character in such a way that I initially didn't like him, although I understood him, to an extent. But by the end of the story, once I saw he was trying to do better, be better, and once I saw the affect Vanessa had on him and the fact that she wasn't just going to sit there and take his old ways, I was a fan.

I got this book free for signing up for the authors' newsletter. This was just a preview of the full book. This is the story of Ryan. How he got to be such a "player" and how he needs to get his life straight again. It's a story of no respect for the women he beds or for himself. His best friend Blake both enables him and tries to help him. Thus leading to the term, the last summer girl. The story flows great but I admit I have a problem with the player aspect of the book. Just not something I get along with.
