As a long time lover of fantasy set in a contemporary environment, I was referred to this novel by an associate at my book club. She is normally quite good and choosing the types of books that stand out from the standard fare and in this case she was spot on. I curled up to this novel over a rainy weekend on the coast and immediately fell for the primary protagonists Gregory and Leyla. This author does a bang up job creating multidimensional characters that transcend the standard fare caricatures that can plague books in this genre. These kids are quite layered and the more you get to know them as the plot progresses the more vivid the story becomes. Another aspect of the story that I like is the description and use of The Vultures; this clan made for a perfect foil and the intrigues surrounding their group was palpable and well fleshed out. Also, the utilization of the elemental abilities in this book was very well designed. I was able to not only follow the story as if it could be real, but my suspension of disbelief naturally encircled me as I read on, hour after hour, unable to let up until the tale was over. I think this is another testament to the author’s skill: she adeptly writes a hero’s journey with an aplomb that you rarely see in so many books anymore. By the time I reached the ending, I was beside myself with the knowledge that this (spoiler alert) is going to be a series! If anyone else is looking for a stellar fantasy novel that will keep you enthralled through to the very last page, you’re definitely going to love this one; I know I did.
