Wow, talk about suspense! I was on the edge of my seat for most of this book. The author creates an amazing set up. She takes what could have been an ordinary mistake on any other day and weaves it into an engrossing story. I couldn't put this book down because I had to know what happened. And where could there possibly be a romance? Well, the author skillfully knitted a budding romance into the fabric of this story seamlessly. I was entranced. And the twists were unexpected and the writing flowed beautifully. If you love romantic suspense, get this book. You won't regret it!

An intriguing plot that turned out to be long and boring.

This was my first Susanne Matthews book and I must say that her writing style is to die for! Within the first few pages of On His Watch I was addicted to both the characters and the story line and just HAD to know more! Susanne Matthews manages to flawlessly balance mystery, violence, redemption and romance into one epic story that was entertaining and heart warming. I can say with all honesty that this will not be my last Susanne Matthew's novel!Let's talk story line.Susanne Matthews manages to take your typical suspense novel story line and throw in enough twists and turns that not one page could ever be considered predictable or boring. It's difficult to say a lot about this book without spoilers...but I'm going to try and do a short and sweet little review for you. Basically, as you know from the blurb, Nikki is brutally attacked and left for dead along with her husband and two children. Jason Spark is an FBI agent standing in for his brother. When he responds to the call he never knew how much it would change him. When Nikki awakes from a 6 week coma she finds herself with a horrible case of amnesia and a very real guardian angel. In the beginning of the book, Nikki's character was dull and very clearly that of a woman who had been beaten into her submission and didn't know how to get out. I think my favorite thing about this book is that the Nikki that wakes up from that coma is NOTHING like the woman that went into it. She is strong, independent and refuses to let anyone walk all over her. She may not remember her life...but her sub-conscious clearly wants her to start standing up for herself and her daughter. When Jason and Nikki realize that the person that attacked her family is still out for blood...the story gets extremely interesting! Honestly...that's about all I can say without spoilers! Just trust me...this is an extremely unique, action packed and well written story that you will not want to miss! How about characters and romance? The romance in On His Watch was very slow to build. In my opinion this was for the best. If things had moved to fast after such a brutal attack...well it would have made the story seem fake and I probably wouldn't have read most of it. While I say that the romance moved slow...I mean that they didn't have their first kiss until about 65% of the way through the book! What comes before that kiss...just wow! What a man!Jason is sweet, caring, and a great role model for Mandy. He is everything that her dad wasn't! Watching Nikki come to love him was so sweet and just perfect! I can't imagine how seeing him with her daughter made her feel. The man is pretty darn close to perfect! He is sexy and strong and protectedher when she couldn't protect herself. Jason is just so very raw...real...he is just your typical man...not a super hero...he makes mistakes...he messes up...he is just an amazing man that is determined to do the right thing. When these two finally do get together it's not's not's just... right! It's's's perfection!Jason and Nikki (with Mandy added in!) are the epitome of MFEO!Trust me when I say that this is one book you will not want to put down and is MORE than worth the purchase! So what are you waiting for? Move over Alfred Hitchcock, this wonderful suspense/romance is a must read if you love action and romance all in an incredibly well written bundle! If I could rate this truly…this would be off my scale! This magnificent story had FBI Special Agent Jason Spark helping out his brother (the sheriff of the little town of Larosa) while he and his new wife were on their honeymoon. Dispatcher and everyone thinking the 911 call was a prank or “butt dial” was normal, his brother had responded to at least a dozen of them that month, and nothing bad ever happens in the sleepy little town of Larosa…. NOT!He finds a scene of grim murder and so much more…then finds the woman on the floor is not quite dead. I’m not doing spoilers; this is just too magnificent a tale to miss.Suzanne Matthews has written some really great books, I loved In Plain Sight and Just for the Weekend. Both were wonderful stories, but this a completely different step up in levels. I actually feel this may be better than a Hitchcock …as it has much more romance and an HEA, which, for me, makes it that much better. However, the twists and crimes within crimes of this marvelously written tale is breath taking! The hero is a compelling and yet very human, real guy. The victim a wonderful woman with so much to face it’s …ahhh. The attraction as he tries to protect her and her daughter from the monsters is the stuff dreams are made of! OOPS…I said no more spoilers! It took a bit more than my favorite wine this time, something a little stronger to keep me from chewing what’s left of my “after gardening” nails off. You won’t want to put this down so try to have a “no interruption” period. But if you have to…ok, just do yourself a solid and read it!Enjoy everyone, I certainly did – you won’t be able to help yourself!ARC was gifted

This is the first Susanne Matthews’ novel I’ve read, and it won’t be the last. As violence butts up against sweet romance here, the juxtaposition is endlessly entertaining. So, On His Watch begins with a sweet scene of a pregnant mom [Nikki] conversing with her charming little daughter [Mandy], and the narrative broadly hints that all things are not perfect in Nikki’s marriage. Things are about to get way worse.Ms. Matthews doesn’t make us wait. Just as Nikki’s [beaten, dull] narrative voice settles, she finds her son murdered on the kitchen floor, and the perpetrators are still in the house. The massacre of Nikki’s family is brutal. Introduce to this scene Jason: FBI agent with a couple mistakes under his belt and a few more in front of him.Okay, I don’t want to rehash the plot, but will mention that one of my favourite bits was that, due to brain damage, Nikki has amnesia when she comes out of her coma. Now, that’s not the favourite part – it’s that Nikki’s voice is suddenly fresh and new as she’s not the person we met at the start. All the people who had beaten her down – and the reasons for her submission – are forgotten, and she stands up for herself. It was a good touch, and a telling statement on how we allow others to affect us.In all, a great read.

On His Watch is a suspenseful thriller with a romantic twist. The plot is not complex, but highly entertaining. With books of fiction, I like well-developed characters involved in rich story-lines that stay with me after I've gone to bed. This book certainly fills that bill. The characters are developed not so much that you can visualize them physically, but you can really understand them emotionally. The two main characters are realistic and believable. Our hero and protector cannot leap tall buildings in a single bound, but is definitely skilled at what he does. He’s an imperfect man with emotions and a big heart who gets the job done. Our victim’s trauma is uniquely captured and this lovely lady’s inner strength reads true. Is there romantic involvement between protector and victim? You’ll see. All the supporting characters are purposefully introduced without superfluous characters to confuse the reader. The pace of the story is set with the situation, on several occasions at a break-neck pace. The book is well researched. A distant villain with a plocomelia abnormality; nice touch. Look it up, I had to.I recommend “On His Watch” as a thoroughly entertaining easy read.

This latest book by S. Matthews seems to me one of her biggest and most challenging projects so far. The plotline is artistically woven, and the characters well-rounded and believable. Nikki Hart is the victim of a brutal attack, during which two of her children are killed and she is severely injured. Only after weeks of her being in a coma do the doctors realize that she has lost her memory.Jason is the man who saved her, and even before she meets him, she thinks of him as her guardian angel. As she heals and the puzzle pieces of her memory gradually get back into place, the friendship between them blooms into something much more meaningful, on the background of the investigation to find the person who changed their lives forever.A well-crafted story, with great visuals and realistic characters. Bravo, Mrs. Matthews!

5 stars. This was an all out edge of your seat romantic suspense. The beginning of the story was filled with heart wrenching tragedy and violence. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing as to who the real villain was. I loved Nikki she was a great heroine, very strong in spite of what had happened. Jason was the perfect flawed hero who had perfectly human foibles. First book by Susanne Matthews but certainly won't be my last if this book is an indication of her other books I've found another favourite author

On His Watch had me captivated from page two. A well-crafted intense story line that kept me turning the pages, but as I neared the end I didn’t want it to be over. The relationship with the characters builds just right at a realistic pace. Jason, Nikki and Mandy were memorable characters. Full of gory details and suspense, Erica Spindler fans will love this book. By far, Susanne Matthews best book to date. Looking forward to her next.

Good vacation mysteryI read this book while on vacation. It was truly mystery there and it kept me guessing at solving. The characters were interesting but some of the villains could have been explored more. Some of the relationship connections could have been made clearer.
