Re-read March 2017 I really do like this one. Good re-read.This was a re-read after reading it over a year ago. It is a sweet tale of MC Ian, a closeted mechanic, convinced love is just not in the cards for him since he lives in a small town and the pickings for gay men are few and far between. Enter calm, caring, beautiful MC Calab, who brings Ian's niece, Terra, to Ian's house after Terra's mother is killed. Calab is the new cop in town and he and Ian fall in love over the course of the book.Hot damn, what's not to love? Yeah, there were a few bumps and bruises, but screw it. These boys were adorable and romantic and the sex was mind-blowing. If you like M/M romance and a large dose of emotion with your sex, this one is for you! Read it!This review is also posted at Gay Book Reviews

A slow paced getting to know you romance this was a nice slow easy read! If you are in the mood for excitement plus this is not for you. But if you are looking for a tender romance between a hunky cop and a sexy mechanic with a couple of teenagers thrown in then this is it! Its not perfect but I enjoyed it!

4.5 starsA nice story about the experience of Ian, a closeted gay mechanics in his late 30s, who lived in a small town. One day, there's a knock on his door. When he opened it, his niece Terra was there, accompanied by a policeman, Caleb. Terra ran away from her home since her mother's boyfriend tried to touch her. Ian asked Caleb to check on his sister's house, and they found her dead and her abusive boyfriend nowhere to be found.Since then, Terra lived with Ian. Now and then, Caleb stopped by on the pretext of checking on how Terra was. Slowly, the two men grew closer. First as friends and later as lovers. But, Ian's livelihood depended on the town's people business and his next door neighbor was a bigot who threatened to out him...I like reading the book. The characters, both main and supporting ones, are likable. The development from friends to lovers is quite fast, but not instalove. Interactions among Ian, Caleb, and Terra are nice too.

3.5Sweet read, not much action, despite it beginning with the murder of Ian's sister and him taking in his teenage niece. And even with Ian being 'deeply closeted' he didn't really try and hide anything with Caleb, so I personally found the blurb a bit misleading. The murder plot was pretty much over on page 3 and even the big bigot Paul didn't add much drama, I liked the how it was 'resolved' except (view spoiler)[ I don't like slapping, and even if I understand Terra and her feelings and motivations, I don't like anyone slapping anyone! but, that's just me! and I don't like females getting a 'pass' at doing that! Had it been the other way around there would have been hell to pay!(hide spoiler)]So, it was an easy relaxing read but I had a real problem figuring out which MC was talking or thinking, others might not, but I had trouble telling them apart.

*sighs* were do I start, probably wishing this book didnt end. firstly a quick over view of the storyline. This is the story of Caleb , a police officer hard working, honest and in need of somone to love, and Ian the local mechanic , who after loosing his sister tragically takes in his niece and tries to get on with life best he can. Only thing is Ian has a secret, no one knows and thats defiantly the way its going to stay, Up until one very big very sexy blue eyed police officer comes knocking on his door. This book was just so beautifully written, you cant help but fall in love with the characters almost immediatly. The way Ian and Caleb dance around their attraction for one another and then the way Caleb gently shows Ian there is nothing to fear in realizing that loving someone can be the most wonderful of things.Caleb nudges Ian into accepting who he is and building toward a happy future together.Every time the author described the look of calebs blue eyes looking at Ian, you could almost feel the pull yourself, You could feel the love and emotion with each and every touch and look they gave each other. Yes the love scenes and I do call them love scenes not just sex scenes because thats what was felt when reading them, were so well written. wow they just made you really belive in love for ever. The story of Caleb and Ian is not just a romantic read it is a journey filled with the warmth of the sun on a winters day. It cocoons you , takes you under and leaves you renewed.loved it

*Insert big sigh*Ya know, I liked the story. It was sweet and soft and warm. The issue I had is that every conflict that arose was immediately solved. It was just too easy. The MC has been in the closet for his entire 38 year life and basically hasn't had sex in 8. He lives alone and just recently adopted his niece after her mother died. Then he meets Caleb and falls in love. There are flickers of angst but as soon as I think the gloves are going to come off, everyone hugs and sings kumbaya. It's a nice slow sweet story.

2.5 stars. A stock standard m/m romance set in a small town about an out and proud cop and a closeted mechanic who takes on his teenage niece after her mother is murdered. Even though the two MC's are presented as huge, butch guys with 'manly' jobs they both moon over each other like a couple of girls. And the sex scenes were waaay too long. I kept nodding off.

This book was a breath of fresh air! The writing was great, the dialogue felt real to me and the MC were older and mature and didn't pussyfoot around with what they wanted. If you like a HEA in your books, this one has a great one.

I just have to say that I am a fan of Diana DeRicci's work. I didn't really get the title or the blurb. For Ian being "deep in the closet" he sure was ready and willing. Sure, he wanted to keep private, but he wasn't denying the fact. However, Ian melted my heart. He might have been afraid, but he went at it with everything he had. Caleb, well, Caleb is just HOT! He knew what he wanted and went for it. I did love how he actually cared about Terra in the beginning. I like how cops actually have feelings and hot act hard like nothing gets to them, anymore. When Caleb first met Ian he was "returning" Ian's 14 year old niece, Terra. She ran away from home because of a conflict at home. She told the police officer her address was Ian's. From there, things escalated.I would have actually liked to have seen what happened in the case. I thought that was a major point in the story, but I guess I liked how it focused on Ian/Terra and Caleb. Ian has to decide if what he has with Caleb is worth his town hating him, losing his business, etc. Caleb has to try to convince Ian that times are changing and coming out isn't as bad as he thinks. He doesn't lie and say it's all rainbows and unicorns, because a certain neighbor is a bigot with a big mouth.Overall, an easy sweet read.

4.5These guys are great. Strong alpha males with good hearts. Caleb protects Ian and Terra with a fierceness I loved; he has a great relationship with his family and eases Ian into the relationship with patience and love. Caleb took his niece in without a moments hesitation, and despite his inexperience with parenting, he is very supportive with Terra, and doesn't fall into the trap of agonizing over every little parenting decision he makes as so many other books where the gay uncle unexpectedly gain custody of his sister's kid(s). While Ian struggles with coming out, he still mans up when it counts and as a bonus the author avoided the overused break up-with-him-and-deny-my-feelings trap. The love scenes were tasty and delicious. I am looking forward to reading the next two books in the series.

Nice story though there were a couple of things that gave me pause. There were very few issues and those that were there were solved rather (too) quickly. It started out good and the relationship between Ian and Caleb progressed perfectly. Friendship first and then on to sex and love. I liked that a lot. As a parent myself I had a couple of "huh?" moments in regards to the way Ian handled a couple of things with his niece, Terra. Also, I felt that the Pete thing was not really resolved. But then again, I've noticed with a couple of other books that I have read by this author that certain things (important things) are brought up but never really mentioned again. The Pete thing was handled but I felt that it was unfinished.Overall a good story.

Didn't feel this one. It isn't necessarily that it was a bad read there just wasn't the drama or fireworks to it that I thought would be there. The writing is solid, if a bit uncreative. Really for what was touted as such a big scary deal it was anticlimactic. I also had a hard time with the idea that the two MRS would move so fast from one point to another when one was so scared of living"out".

Maybe more like 4,5* but I decided I will only give full 5 stars to the best of the best from now on...the very good ones will get 4 and the good ones 3 ... yeah I know, no one was very sweet and there was a kid and a hot police check and check for me...

I must admit to liking this book much more than I thought I would. I was expecting a fluffy, silly story but it was really, really good. Nothing fluffy about it. And some nice lovin' too. Can't beat that! Hot mechanic, biker guy and hot cop guy. Yum. :)

When we decided on a Men In Uniform theme for this month, I went a bit crazy trying to figure out what to review. Firemen, cops, paramedics – how is a girl to choose just one book? I went with Tougher to Love by Diana DeRicci because I was sorely in need of a nice, comforting read that wasn’t going to leave me in angsty tears, angry tears or sad tears. I just wasn’t in the mood for a shit ton of drama, and this book was exactly what I needed to de-stress.Small town mechanic, Ian, is happy with his life. He’s had a few relationships but not anything that he would consider leaving his closet to save. But his comfortable life is turned upside down when a policeman knocks on his door with his half frozen niece in tow.Caleb transferred to the town of Jasper needing a fresh start. His family knows that he’s gay, his boss knows that he’s gay and although he doesn’t flaunt it, he has no intention of ever hiding it. When a runaway teen lands Caleb on Ian’s doorstep, Caleb hopes that maybe he’s found somebody that he can move on with. But if the two men are going to be together then Caleb needs Ian to be brave enough to face life as an out gay man.You hear words like – small town, closeted and murder and think, oh yay another angst-fest. But like I already mentioned, nope. Not a wisp of angst in sight. This story is all about family and romance and acceptance and while the obligatory raving bigot does rear his ugly head there’s no lengthy, drawn out drama surrounding him.And when I say there’s romance, that’s exactly what there is. Caleb and Ian are just so bloody brilliant together. They’re one of those couples that you wish were real just so you could hang out with them and bask in the madly-in-love vibe that you can just imagine would emanate from them. The secondary characters, which mainly consist of Caleb’s large family, are also endearing and fun to read about. As the series continues the extended family just continues to grow – in numbers and in awww factor. Actually, the most exciting thing about re-reading this book? I discovered that a fourth book in the series was released back in February and I somehow missed it!If you’re in the mood to read something sweet and easy then I recommend you pick up this four book series and start reading all about the happy today.Reviewed for Love Bytes Reviews

2014 Re-read:Cute. Well, more angsty than cute, but it still ends on that satisfied note. Sure taking its time with unravelling all the changes to the better, bit by bit, too.So the romance was kind of sweet and slow, which I consider a good thing. There could have been less sex but what was there did not strike me as redundant either.Overall, though, it was about relationship and personal freedom more than, uh, erotica. Whatever.Ian and Terra especially make a touching team – without being saccharine about it.The only things that annoyed me were a few inconsistencies. As such, Caleb is three inches taller than Ian, yet “there wasn’t a hairsbreadth of a difference in their heights”?Or Caleb being referred to and hailed as “Officer” half the time, and the other half he’s “the sheriff” or addressed as “Sheriff” – even though someone else clearly holds that position. So I don’t know what to think. Small things like that tend to confuse me beyond what’s reasonable.Still, I enjoyed reading this undoubtedly solid romance.2012 Review:Mmm. This was nice. Well, actually it was very good. Not perfect but the story as such worked wonderfully and the characters were rich and deep, the happiness accumulating sweetly until the end.Once again, this was not about a straight guy falling in love with a man, as I’ve come to almost expect for this author. Instead we had issues of severe closeting and struggle for acceptance in a small town. The guys were older than average for romances, circling around forty, give or take a couple of years, and they were both big, tough, “manly” men. As is typical, though, we got loving and accepting family members and although the entire tone of the book remained utterly serious, it also felt really good.Right off the bat the seriousness is obvious, too, since it starts with Ian’s teenage niece landing on his doorstep after (view spoiler)[her mother’s boyfriend killed said mother, tried to rape the girl (hide spoiler)] and then kicked her out into the cold. And yes, summed up this sounds like a huge pile of cheap melodrama, but in actuality this is dealt with quietly, respectfully and realizing the scope of impact this sort of situation creates. The author’s style is not perfect but she’s definitely doing a good job and staying away from simplicity. Also, just to reaffirm this, she writes very nice sexual scenes. They’re always relevant and chock-full of emotion, sensation and heat. :3Since all I have left by her for now is one short story I really hope she will write up some more. <3

So I really liked the pacing and the characters of this story. Caleb and Ian don't just "fall" together. Sure Caleb is attracted to Ian, but given the circumstances of their meeting, he doesn't want to cause the guy any more difficulty - and he's not even sure he's gay. The patience and caring that Caleb shows for Ian and Terra is just so nice to see. Ian puts his niece as his first priority - and he'd never put his own desires ahead of her happiness. Somewhere along the way though, he realizes that just maybe he can be happy too and that maybe he deserves more out of life than just existing. I also enjoyed watching Ian become more comfortable with who he is and standing up for himself. Aaron and Terra are comfortable with their uncles and there is no reason why the rest of the family shouldn't be as well. Caleb's family is fine with them and Ian soon relaxes into the crowd. Of course Ian's idiot neighbor has to be the fly in the ointment, but lucky he doesn't seem to hold much sway over anyone. He's a little out of touch with reality and I loved that he got taken out by a teenage girl!

It's a lovely story that I enjoyed. Good supporting female character and it is one of the better coming out of the closet stories that I have read so far. It really makes you think that although we live in a more open world now where being gay isn't any big deal anymore (depending on where you live etc), it still is to the older generation where they have had prejudice inbred into them at an early age and won't be changing their views as they grow older, they are too set in their ways. That also goes into a way of behaving, having lived most of your life hiding who you really are it would be extremely difficult to go about changing that and embracing who you are. This story touches on these things and shows that with love and support all things are possible and makes things that seem extremely scary less so when you have a shoulder to lean on.

A really cute book with great main characters. The MC's were sweet and protective of each other, and Terra. I would have liked to see more angst in the story. There were two good story lines with Striker and Paul but neither seemed to come to a climax - in fact, I kept bracing for Striker to come back but he never did. All of a sudden he was in jail. And Paul is obviously a set-up for another novel, but he could have been made more of a problem for Ian and Caleb. Overall, though a good book, great sex, and stunning main characters.

Pros: The story was sweet and slow with low angst. Families were incorporated into the plot in a really nice way. The teenagers acted true to age. The plot pulled everything together into a satisfying HEA. Cons: The MCs acted a little too girlie in some places. The sex scenes were too flowery and not that smexy. The writing style was clunky and did not read smoothly. This book had the feel of a new cross over MF writer.

I enjoyed this love story. Very real characters and I was glad to know there are more in the series so I did not have to say goodbye to them. Family oriented MC's, even though they would probably not describe themselves that way, plus they are sexy and they are both are the strong/silent type. Very entertaining!

★★☆ rounded up to ★★★This was a fairly standard small town closeted man being seduced out of the closet for lurv ... I didn't rate it higher because there seemed to be parts missing ... there were these mini build-ups to drama which just fizzled out ... this isn't a bad read, just nothing to rave about.

2.75 starsTypical formula.. Started well with the MC taking in his niece after his sister was murdered.. then it just moved into the standard small town/closeted man meets new hunky cop in town.. Dragged out too slowly, to the stage where I skipped through to the end. HEA
