Kevin Breaux’s first book in this series, Soul Born, had such a unique twist that I couldn’t wait to see what was in store for book two. Blood Divided did not disappoint. In Soul Born, we were introduced to the battle hero, Karn, the evil sorceress, Opal, and the beautiful elf, Tala. From this love triangle came, Megan and Nathan, Karn’s children with Opal, and Autumn and Lucien, Karn’s children with Tala. This is their story. Breaux’s characters are more fleshed out in this sequel. He gives multiple perspectives of the story from the viewpoints of various characters, thus the reader forms a bond with each character and is genuinely concerned for their welfare. The author also gives us a truly malevolent antagonist. Khaos is an evil killer that forces the reader to despise him and want to see him defeated. At the same time, however, the author gives the reader multiple looks into the inner psyche of Khaos, which provides clues as to why this man had grown into such a villain. Breaux has a penchant for strong women and continues that trend in Blood Divided. Megan easily became my favorite character because not only does she have a good heart, but she is strong and courageous. Also, like her mother, she has some sweet magic skills that allow her to lay the smack down on the enemy. Amidst all the family drama of Karn’s children, there is a political storm cloud that threatens to plunge Illyia into total war. This further complicates the issues facing the children of Karn as each child is forced to take sides and figure out how to survive in the ensuing turmoil. There are some frenetic and engaging action scenes involved in this plotline that keep the story moving and had me turning pages frantically, anxious to see what happened next. While this book is obviously building towards another installment, it’s not done in a way as to leave the reader without any sense of finality for this particular part of the story. The pacing feels right, and the reader is left wanting more but not feeling like the book ends too abruptly. Blood Divided is a solid, well-written, fantasy novel that will draw you in and hold on tight from beginning to end. Bring on part three Mr. Breaux!

I first heard about this book while browsing Goodreads, and saw that there was a giveaway listed for it. I immediately entered, and to my surprise I won! The cover is gorgeous and it is what initially caught my attention. Blood Divided is the second book in the Soul Born Saga, set 20 years after the first book. I haven’t read the first book, Soul Born but the author provided enough background/history of the characters throughout the book so that readers can don’t need to start in order. The book follows the children of Karn, Illyia’s beloved hero, two sets of siblings from the same father but different mother. Megan (depicted on the cover) and Nathan are the children of Karn and Opal the sorceress. Autumn and Lucien are the children of Karn and Tala (the elf). All four will come together in the kingdom of Illyia, as some form alliance and other seek retribution. I read a couple of fantasy novels, but this is by far the best fantasy novel I’ve read in a long time. As I mentioned before I haven’t read the first novel, but it feels as if I’ve already known the characters. The characters are well-written and feel so real that they leap off the pages. There was never a real good versus evil, black or white with the characters ….many of the characters walk in the gray area. Even though the book is central around four main characters, all the secondary characters still played a big part in the book and help shaped the central characters and the world itself. The world that Breaux created is full of political intrigue, betrayal, love and loss. If you’re looking for a well established world and a cast of amazing characters, then I highly recommend the Soul Born Saga. The pacing of the book was great; there was never a dull moment. This book will have you glued to the pages from beginning to end, with a conclusion that will have you begging for the next book, Flesh Ended. I definitely plan on reading the next book, in the mean time I’ll probably go back and read the first book in the series, Soul Born.

Blood Divided is the second in the Soul Born Saga from author Kevin James Breaux and is my favorite so far! I have been an absolute fan of Kevin's work since Soul Born, absolutely loving his way with words. My favorite thing about the first book was that, while definitely following the epic fantasy tradition, there was no clear line between good and evil. I was happy to see this continue in Blood Divided, a fresh and different way to go with the fantasy genre. It helps create characters that are so much more believable, practically jumping off the pages, much more than just words on a page. There was a very interesting mix of characters in this book, many falling into that gray area between good and evil. This is the kind of book that you fall into and become a part of the world in which it is set. You feel for and with the characters and you live in the story with them. There are twists and turns, sadness and anger, honor and betrayal, and no small amount of intrigue. I love a book that makes you both love and hate the same character throughout the story! This book had a bigger cast of people involved in the story, all of whom were completely developed no matter their role in the story. The twists and turns of the first book melded seamlessly with this book, with surprising resolutions to many of the questions from the first. The next book in the saga will be Flesh Ended, and I absolutely can't wait for it!

I've never been a fan of dark fantasy, mostly because of the death and the horror. But Kevin Breaux's Soul Born Saga has changed that. The series has the perfect mix of fantasy, love, tragedy, betrayal, and magic--so much so that I have become addicted to reading them! The stories have amazing twists and turns you'd never expect, with a realistic ending that might make you cry.

I liked SO many aspects of Blood Divided. The the plot is great and the writing is rich and descriptive, but there is so much more going on.Blood Divided, the follow-up novel to Soul Born, is an exciting and wild return to the kingdom of Illyia, 20 years after the events of the first novel. Even with the time difference, the reader is seamlessly allowed to discover what changes have occurred in our "absence". I loved that there is no laborious re-telling of the first installment to get readers "caught up". We discover how the past connects with the present right along with the characters. We also experience the emerging horrors as they occur. As in Soul Born, the action is well described, vivid, jarring, and bloody. As a "reformed" mmo gamer, I could appreciate the imagery that seemed to follow the "Death Knight" and Mage. This time around, we meet new characters, and revisit with the veterans of Book 1. I have to say that I am seriously impressed with an any author that writes characters who are are not typical archetypes, but are combinations of traits such as good, evil, vanity, desire, love, selflessness, and self-loathing. I have to admit that the first time around I was not a fan of seeing the flaws of my favorite characters, but now I totally get it. Also there is no all powerful, super hero, warrior class, half-god to save the day. I liked what that said about the nature of the common person's bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. I could also appreciate that Mr. Breaux writes female characters that do not make me want to pull my hair out in frustration. The are not simpering, weak or helpless nor are they unbelievable powerhouses of aggression. Now I will admit, there is a fair amount of gender based issues in this series as it concerns women as users and men as abusers, but these issues are part of the themes that power the rage and purpose behind the antagonist(s) and help the reader to understand their nature.I gave Blood Divided 4 stars. I withheld the last star for 2 reasons. I found that some of the supporting characters were a bit like colorful scenery. They seemed three dimensional at first glance, but were really flat and without substance. I really would have liked to get to know Red Fawn, and Vasche a bit better, outside of their relationships with Karn's progeny. The final reason is that the teacher in me cried out over a few typos, such as wing instead of wind within the first few pages of the book. I love supporting independent writers, and the the powers that be use poor editing as a rallying cry against independent publishing. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I am hoping for more action, deeper character development, and for the scores to be settled (I want to see some serious payback!)

Well all I can say is that I am a big fan of the first story “Soul Born” and of course the author Kevin. I was surprised when I read the original story because it was full of unique characters and a lot of exciting scenes. Each page gripped me. So I was looking forward immensely to the second book in the series. Blood Divided didn’t fail! It engaged me from the first page and Kevin has again created new and well rounded characters. Each are flawed either by greed, the desire for power and they are all superbly written. The writing as with Soul Born is fast paced and edgy giving you the chance to take in what is happening and to imagine these events as they unfold. The storyline has definitely built on all that was created within Soul Born. We are drawn this time into the world of royalty, and again we see the effect of magic on the world of Illyia. As readers you meet those who are evil, characters who are confused about their responsibilities as well as their purpose and I think we definitely get to see the physical as well as mental changes to certain characters such as Tala.Kevin has always had a great ability to layer characteristics and surprise you with some new information at any time. I loved this book. If you have read “Soul Born” then you no doubt had a lot of questions you wanted to have asked and this book doesn’t just do that it creates more questions. All I can say is that the ending surprised me and left me biting my nails wondering what will happen in the next book. I have been fortunate to talk to Kevin about this book while I’ve been reading. He is always there to talk to you about how you find the book and little insights into the characters which I always helps as well as makes me think. I do think it helped me to engage with the settings as well as the characters. Blood Divided is a fantastic read. Like Soul Born it is a must read!!

Blood Divided is the next installment of the fantastic Soul Born series. It picks up 20 years after the events in the first book (which you really should read before reading this). We see a few characters from the first book and see how they have fared in the time since the first book, and we are introduced to the children of Opal and Tala. The plot soon develops that there is a new threat to Illyia. The characters old and new must work together to find a way to stop it. What happens is a fantasic page turning read which once you've finished leaves you breathlessly wanting the next installment.

Excellent follow-up to Soul Born. Illyia has become a new place and so this is a new beginning, but ties into Soul Born well. Lots of suripises here. Great action. Some romance. Even a little something for us horror fans. You can see how Kevin's skils as an author have grown and I feel he is building up to something huge in the next book. I love how he is slowly telling the back story as he moves forward, it keeps me glued to the chair. Great job!

Another good addition to the Soul Born Saga, this book is set 20 years after Soul Born. It features 4 main characters, two sets of twins with the same father but different mothers, Tala (the elf) and Opal.(the mage)Although the timeline is different, this book continues on seemlessly from the first due to the mix of old and new characters. Again, it is well written and what interests me is the combination of good/bad characters and the choices they make.

Full Review originally over at Fantasy Book Critic Overall Rating - 3 & 1/2 StarsANALYSIS: Blood Divided is the sequel to Soul Born and as a book; I was a bit apprehensive as to how it would turn out to be. The preceding book was proclaimed to be a dark epic fantasy tale and promised much however didn’t quite live up to its promise for the reasons described in my review. This book however has another great cover and in this particular regard is a great follow-up to the first cover. The sequel begins twenty years later than the events of the first book, the lands of Illyia now are under the rule of the king Ethan Essex who was the former duke of Kel Tora. His queen is Tala Silverwolf, former lover of Karn and current wife to Ethan. She has been blessed with a son and daughter who share her elfish traits as well as their father’s human genes. Opal has lived a secret life of sorts as well and she also has two progeny of her own. Autumn, Lucien, Megan and Nathan/Khaos are the four children that are bound by blood and magic and its there story which introduces readers to the world of Illyria once again. There’s a lot more which I have left vague in regards to the four children as well as their parents as the story demands that the reader discover their motivations, plans and actions in the book itself. The opening chapters have quite a twist to them thereby surprising the reader with the direction of the plot, plus the author reveals a lot more details about the background story. The backstory is very suitably introduced through out the starting chapters. Particularly surprising is the enticing concept of avatars which was a small part of the earlier book but is rather nicely expanded upon quite precisely and fuels a major plot point. The magic system is also explained more this time around and forms a pertinent part of the plot. There's also the Tala short story which gives us an important look into the events between the first and the second book, readers would be wise to read that excerpt as it will deepen their understanding of the story. The author has done a decent job with the prose and its a definite plus from the previous book. The author seems to have plotted this story out and the pace of this book is definitely a redeeming factor, it never lets the reader rest, the story zooms ahead with all its twists and revelations and that is indeed a good point. Lastly the characterization once again is a positive factor and the character cast is suitably expanded. However the focus is tightly controlled and therefore the readers get a very good insight into the POV character actions and thoughts. There are still some nagging points about the book namely that plot seemed a bit too convoluted at times. The entire story has some plot twists that seemed a bit coincidental sometimes. Another feature which works against the book is that the plot is a bit stereotypical, beginning with the death-crazed villain to his enamored sidekick to the half-blooded prince, etc. The story is also a bit predictable and therefore most veteran readers will easily be able to guess most of the plot points. In this regard Kevin J. Breaux fails to divert the reader’s attention and therefore the story does get adjudged to be bit weak. As a fantasy fan, I want the book to make me forget about its fallacies by its shining points however this story wasn’t able to do that completely. The tight focus of the POV structure robs the reader of knowing the overall scale of the destruction wrought but this was just something of a personal observation.CONCLUSION: Blood Divided is a sequel and a book which can be read on its own, Kevin J. Breaux has definitely shown improvement in his second outing and this does raise my hopes for the last book in the trilogy. This book will appeal to fans of Dragonlance and R. A Salvatore books, it's also a strong sequel that manages to take the story in a different direction than expected.

Blood Divided by Kevin James BreauxBlood Divided is the sequel to Soul Born set 20 years later. Illyia has had years of peace but now political snafu is in the works. War will again be coming to the land. It centers around 2 sets of twins, one born to Opal and the other Tala. While the first book had shades of grey between good and evil the second book makes it very clear who is evil. That’s EVIL with all caps! The antagonist Nathan is a definite Blackguard or Anti-Paladin for all you gamers. For you non gamers the character is a dark champion and everything about him is a twisted visage of evil, he is frightening and manipulative. This book has a broader cast and I love how all the characters weather good or bad have flaws which makes them more believable for the reader. I finished this book in about 2 days and liked it even more than the first book. The story really drew me in and I can’t wait for conclusion of the series. Kevin Breaux’s writing has grown over his works and I think he has a promising future.I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads for a fair and honest review.

Kevin James Breaux's sequel to Soul Born kicks off twenty years after the first story ends. There is enough back story to keep the 'uninitiated' in the loop, but it can also be read as a stand-alone.From the get-go, I was hooked (maybe because I'm already an 'initiated'), and had me up well past my bedtime to see 'what happens next' to the ensemble cast. It was good to see Tala (the Elf) again and the return of one of my favourites, Zian, the werewolf. Back too in one form or the other is Opal, the misguided mage. And then there is the new cast, each with unique personalities that jump out the page and drive the story forward.I look forward to the next in the sequel.
